W - Water

water"And the Spirit of God moved upon the waters." (Genesis 1:2)

Does it still do this? With all the benefits it gives us, it certainly is a blessing to have access to water in its purest form. As we can feel the benefit of it through a contrast shower to rinse of the toxins that we are eliminating through our skin, so we all know the experience of its refreshing power as 70% of our body is made of water when we are thirsty.

Water is the key to all the functions of our body: Our digestion, circulation, breathing, elimination, bones and joints, muscles and nerves, gland and senses, all depend on it. In its purest form it is a protection from diseases, as it is a vital factor in all our bodily fluids. It is important for a good functioning of the immune system and it is the main transport medium throughout the body for nutrients to build the body up as well as for waste products for detoxification purposes.

Depending on the climate, season, activity level and our dietary habits our needs of water are variable. Cooking and dehydrating, as frequently done in the gourmet kitchen increases the need. Unless eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, 8-9 big glasses (2-3 liters) of pure water per day between meals are a good guide. We should drink it between meals. Drinking it with food will dilute our digestive juices and delay digestion.

S – Sunshine

"Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light on the earth, and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. So the evening and the morning were the fourth day."(Genesis 1:16-19)

Light is an absolute essential not just to the plants on our planet, but also for all the whole creation. Every tiny blade of grass, every vine, flower, vegetable, bush and tree draws its life from the sunshine. But not just the vegetation, all living things on earth depend upon light for their existence. People who are denied the vital rays of the sun have an ill appearance, dying for want of sunshine! Many people are depressed simply due to the lack of this bright light! In combination with exercise they are important in the treatment of depression. Sunshine assists the skin in the production of Vitamin D, which is important for the bones to be strengthened and to be maintained. Even the hormone testosterone and ATP, an agent that carries energy to the cells of the body are increased by sun exposure. This leads to increased muscular growth and improved endurance. As the sun shines during the day it might surprise some people that direct sun exposure in the early daytime improves the quality of our nighttime rest and our feeling of wellbeing by increasing our melatonin production. We should try to utilize it as much as we can, however, we should avoid overexposure in form of sunburn. So enjoy it, but with temperance.

T - Temperance

temperance"Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Has God indeed said, 'You shall not eat of every tree of the garden'? And the woman said unto the serpent, "We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden; but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, 'You shall not eat of it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.'" (Genesis 3:1-3)

Here we read about the test that God gave to Adam and Eve. When we read it carefully, we realize that Eve has been contemplating about this test a lot, as she added something to the test from her own imagination. God had said: "Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die." (Genesis 2:16+17) Eve added to it the phrase: "nor shall you touch it!" She had been contemplating about visiting the tree probably for a long time to see what the real issue was behind God's restriction. We know the story of how she gave in to the serpent that Satan used as a medium and ate of the tree in order to gain more wisdom. She was not satisfied with the knowledge and wisdom that God had been sharing with Adam and Eve on his daily visits in the garden. And of course she "gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat." (Genesis 3:6) He could not bear the thought of losing her and ate, too. What a success story for Satan: One was tempted and two fell.

How often does it happen to us: We decide to be temperate. We plan not to eat, drink or do certain things. But then we do not want to offend someone or stand out in the crowed. For these reasons we end up giving in and other around us will too. Every time someone gives in, is a further step in the decline of society. The spread of substance abuse causes many fatalities and uncountable sorrow. Looking at alcohol alone we know that every fourth fatality of a person under 30 years of age is alcohol related. Not to forget all the emotional and health related problems that are related to this. The list goes on with smoking, overeating, overworking, ... Temperance can be summarized nicely as: "Avoiding everything that is bad for you and using the good in moderation." We would like to add to it: "And being an example to others, to help them in their struggles."

So when we think about temperance, we can think about it as a test, just like Adam and Eve where tested on this. Christ's first temptation after His 40 day fast was on appetite too. He showed that it is possible conquer it. So we see, that this test will have to be passed by us, too.

Fasting is actually a technique wise men have used for centuries to heal the sick. Regular fasting helps the body heal itself and to stay well. It gives all our organs a rest. Fasting can help reverse the aging process. If we apply it correctly, we will live longer, happier lives. A good way to do it would be to start with weekly 24-36 hour fasts. This will help you to remove a lot of the toxic waste, which accumulated over the years. This will prepare you to tolerate 3-4 day fasts over the course of the following months much better. Each time you complete a fast you will feel much better. Your body will have a chance to rebuild its immune system and heal. You can fight of illness and degenerative diseases, which are so common in this chemically polluted environment we live in. When you feel a cold, illness, depression or allergic attack come, fast. You will be surprised about the results, physically, mentally as well as spiritually.

A - Air

air"Thus God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were under the firmament; and it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven. So the evening and the morning were the second day." (Genesis 1:7+8)

As we see "the birds of the air" (Genesis 1:26, 28, 30) fly in heaven we are reminded that every created being is in need of pure, unpolluted air. Man can be without food for many weeks. "And when He (Jesus) had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry." (Matthew 4:2) Without water we can survive many days, but without air only a few minutes. With that it becomes clear that the quality of the air must also play a major role. In Eden it was perfect, as was the humidity and the temperature of the air. So we should see to it that we make arrangements for the best possible air to breathe for us, as well as for our loved ones. I you still live in crowded or industrialized areas, it will most likely be beneficial to sleep with open windows at night, as the pollution will be the least at that time. Most of us fall into the habit of superficial breathing, which leads to fatigue and depression. Deep breathing on the other hand improves the oxygen supply of the brain. If you do not know how to do it correctly just follow these instructions:

Lie flat on your back or stand in front of a big mirror. Relax and slowly inhale through your nose, but do not try to lift up or move your upper chest and shoulders. When inhaling, place your hands on your lower ribs, which are known as the floating ribs. If you are breathing correctly you can feel your lower ribs expand. Slowly take in a long, deep breath. When you feel that your lungs are filled to full capacity with air, then you can slowly expel the breath with a long, lip-pursed sigh. Deep breaths help you to mobilize and eliminate waste and toxins. This improves our mental wellbeing and physical performance
